Spiritual Disciplines

It is the small things in life that make the biggest impact.

Navy Seals in Training

Did you know that 70%-80% of Navy Seal trainees drop out of the first phase of training? The first phase of training, called BUD/S, consists of a series of demanding individual physical tests including frequent sets of push-ups and sit-ups, ocean swims and timed 4 mi runs in boots and long trousers, in soft sand. Week 4 of the phase completes with 132 hours of continuous physical activity (only 4 hrs sleep in 5 days!)

Each one of these activities alone would not be that hard, but completing all of them faithfully and consistently is a much different story.

The Christian walk is very much the same.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-20, Paul is writing about the little things in a christian walk that can make the biggest difference. If you really want to grow in your christian walk and your relationship with God, become faithful on these things.

  1. Be joyful - Real joy comes from God not your circumstances.
  2. Develop a prayer life - Keep short accounts of sin with God.
  3. Be thankful - Americans are so blessed and it is sometimes hard to be thankful for the things God have blessed us with.
  4. Be spiritual - Be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit in your life.
  5. Despise not preaching - Listen to the man of God speak.

Discipline is hard! That said, these disciplines done faithfully and consistently will make the biggest impact your your life and the life of those around you.
