Not a Religion

What does God want of you?

King David was called the "man after God's own heart". Was this because David was perfect? Absolutely no. Was this because God liked David more than anyone else? Absolutely not. So what set David apart to be called a "man after God's own heart"? Interesting enough, David's failures are the very thing that caused him to become closer to God. It was David's humble, repentant heart and his desire to serve God that caused him to have a close walk with God. It was during the low times that God blessed David despite of his sin.

This should be a huge encouragement to us. God doesn't expect us to be perfect because we can't be perfect. Our sin nature makes sure of that. So how do we become like David in our walk with God?

In Micah 6:6-8, we find three things that God requires or wants from us.

  1. Do Justly - We are not perfect, so this is a daily process (sanctification) of being rightly related with God. Confess your sins and keep short accounts of sin with God.

  2. Love Mercy - God's amazing mercy is shown through salvation. We do not get what we deserve. Since we are God's Ambassadors to the world, do people see God's mercy in us? Are we extending God's mercy to people around us?

  3. Walk Humbly with God - The trend is for us to walk away from God rather than walk toward God. It is our sin nature that makes this happen so easily. We need realize that being a Christian is not a religion but rather a relationship.

King David practiced these things and as a result had a close relationship with God. How well are you doing?
